Tips for a Successful Newborn Portrait Session

How to Prepare for your Newborn Photo Session

Houston newborn photographer, Lisa Carr with Belly to Baby Studios, shares information on how to prepare for your newborn photo session.

Once you have identified your newborn photographer and booked your session, you should begin preparing for your newborn’s milestone session. Here are a few tips:

1. Feed your baby well at home before the session. We need your baby to be relaxed and have a full tummy for the session. If you baby is moving around a lot, and demonstrating feeding ques, it is time to feed. Be patient with this.

Bring plenty of formula with you if you are bottle feeding. Bring more than what your baby typically eats at home as we have found most babies eat more when in a new environment. We have a fridge and bottle warmer available for our clients to use during the newborn session.

Tips for a Successful Newborn Portrait Session

The list below is just a helpful guide of some foods to avoid while breastfeeding:

Citrus Acidic foods and drinks such as:

  • Cranberries
  • Pineapple
  • Grapefruit
  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Strawberries
  • Chili
  • Pizza
  • Chocolate
  • Spaghetti
  • Ketchup
  • Peanuts (Nuts in General)
  • Mexican/ Spicy Food
  • Tomatoes or tomato products

 Gassy Vegetables such as:

  • Asparagus
  • Onion
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Cucumbers/pickles

Restrict foods such as:

Soda, Coffee, Tea, Wine and Beer. Check with your doctor to see if dairy is also an issue.

We highly suggest if your baby is gassy, to avoid the foods mentioned 48 hours before your session.

2. Bring plenty of diapers for your baby. Your baby will probably need to be changed frequently during the session so be prepared! We have a changing station available for our clients during the session. Just bring your diapers and wipes. We do keep a few extra of these on hand just in case but every client, or baby, has their own preferences.

3. Bring a change of clothes. Are we also photographing parents in addition to your newborn’s photo session? We have a changing room and makeup area available for our clients to use while we are in session with your newborn. Please bring extra clothes if you are unsure what to wear for your family session. We are happy to provide a clothing consult a few days before your newborn portrait session, or right before. Here are a few clothing tips:

  • – Solid colors work best
  • – Wear clothes that are comfortable, that make you feel confident
  • – Avoid patterns
  • – Long sleeve is highly recommended

Certified Professional Photographers

If you visit our websites often, you may have seen a new logo or professional designation by our names: CPP. What is a CPP? What does that really mean? CPP stands for Certified Professional Photographer. Certification is only granted by Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the world’s largest non-profit association organized for professional photographers. Lisa Carr, CPP, recently earned this professional designation. I had to pass a written question test, as well as submit a portfolio or body of work for review. My portfolio had to demonstrate specific lighting, posing, color balance, and harmony in our photographs. In February 2016, over 80 photographers submitted their portfolios, and only 50% passed and earned the CPP designation. To maintain this credential, I have to recertify every 3 years. This process insures photographers remain current in our photographic field and current in our craft.
PPA includes additional info on the CPP standard and you can read about that below:

“These days, photography is practiced by anyone with a smartphone, but it’s mastered by few. When it comes to those once-in-a-lifetime moments—when you’ve got one shot at getting it right—you better make sure the person behind the camera is a pro. A proven professional photographer that is.

There’s no greater proof than when the letters “CPP” follow a photographer’s name. They designate a Certified Professional Photographer, someone who is putting in the extra work to stay above the rest. It assures you of this photographer’s professional knowledge and experience, while also declaring that photographer as one who has achieved and maintains a higher standard.

See the Difference Certified Professional Photographers Make

Consistency. CPPs know how to achieve great results—every time. You get a strong collection of images that tell your story, not a few lucky snapshots, and you will work with someone who knows how to produce a quality image under any circumstances.

Technical Skills. CPPs are more than picture takers. They are students of art, lighting, posing, fashion and even interior design. They combine these elements to create images that fit your unique style and become works of art you will treasure for generations.

Unique Artistry. CPPs have the skills to create unique, customized works of art—not cookie-cutter pictures. They follow an artistic vision. It’s your story captured as a collection of art.

Professionalism. When you hire a CPP, you know you’re getting someone who is willing to go the extra mile to deliver the best possible images. They are business owners who thrive on customer service and satisfaction, and they continuously aim to produce products that exceed your—and their—best expectations. These images are keepsakes whose stories you’ll tell time and time again and treasure forever.

Just about anyone can take a good picture every now and then. But when life’s biggest moments are unfolding and there’s just one chance to capture that perfect memory, don’t risk it. Entrust your photography needs to a Certified Professional Photographer and see the difference for yourself.”

Houston Newborn Photography

Houston newborn photographer, Lisa Carr, CPP, with Belly to Baby Studios recently photographed these adorable triplets in studio. With multiples the challenge is to get them all settled and grouped together comfortable all at the same time. It is not easy ☺. It takes a lot of patience and calmness but in the end it is all worth it. The wraps and accessories shown here are all from our prop closet. The color tones and fabric are all soft, neutral and light tones. We photographed each baby separately and also made time to capture a few groupings of all 3 babies.

Belly to Baby Studios is located in the Galleria area, in a professional office building, 77057. We specialize in Maternity and newborn portraits. We recommend scheduling your baby’s session actually before your delivery date, if at all possible. In some cases, this is not always possible and we understand that. We do have Moms call us that have already had their baby, and their baby is a few weeks old. That is ok, we do not turn babies away when they are outside of the ideal 12 day old window. The important thing is to get your baby photographed when they are still tiny and a newborn. You can reach us at 713-461-2862, or visit our site to learn more: www.bellytobabystudios.com
