Julian was 1 month old when his session was scheduled and he slept so well during his session. Once he woke up we even had time to photograph him with his eyes open. We always recommend having your newborn photographed within 7-12 days of life. Many moms call us after their newborn arrives and still want to schedule newborn sessions. We are fine with photographing newborns that are not 7-12 days old! We believe it is so important to capture newborns when they are small so our clients can treasure those keepsake portraits.

We have all the backgrounds, baskets, hats and diaper covers so all you need to do is arrive with your baby! You can view our Prop Closet here. Just remember to bring plenty of formula or milk with you, and extra diapers. You can relax in a private room during your newborn’s session and get some much needed rest. You are also welcome to peek into the camera room during the session so you can see your baby’s session in real time.

It is recommended that you photographed newborns between 7-12 days old. If you are a new Mom, or have never had your newborn photographed professionally you may be wondering why. This time frame is recommended so that your baby will sleep a bit more and so that they are still flexible since their bones and muscles have not fully developed. Babies that are older than this will typically stretch out more and reach out more with their hands during their sessions, and also may not want to be scrunched up or swaddled. We always receive calls after a baby has been born, and Moms are panicked because they did not pre-schedule their baby’s newborn session weeks in advance. We always leave room in our calendars for these last minute sessions. We also believe that it is very important to have your newborn’s photographed even if they are older than the recommended time frame of 7-12 days old. We know older babies will need to be handled differently and accommodations made for extra feedings during the session. If you can plan ahead and schedule during your pregnancy that’s great! We know life does not go as planned and you get busy. Many Moms call us from the hospital to schedule their baby’s newborn portraits. We anticipate this and leave room in our schedule to accommodate last minute newborn and family portrait sessions.

When calling different studios, here are a few tips of what to ask the photographer and what to know:

1. Experience

How long has this person been a photographer? Are they a hobbyist or pro photographer? What type of accreditation or professional organizations does this photographer have?

We have been professional photographers for over 20 years. We have professional camera and lighting equipment. These are our tools of the trade and help us create beautiful portraits for our clients. We are Certified Professional Photographers through PPA (Professional Photographers of America).

We always have an assistant on set when photographing your baby to ensure baby safety. This is a top priority for us.

2. Portfolio

When calling studios it is important to preview their portfolio first. Make sure you love what you see and you can envision having your portraits taken at that studio. Ask about the props and what is included with your newborn session.

3. Service and Products

While it might be tempting to select a newborn photographer based on price, it’s best to not always go with the cheapest. Your time is valuable and your baby is very important to you. We have received many calls from clients that have had their session in the hospital or with another studio and they were not happy with the quality of images. We will guide you through your family portrait session and make sure you look your best after having a baby!

Maternity Portraits in Houston

Houston Maternity and newborn photographer, Lisa Carr, with Belly to Baby Studios recently captured this Mom’s pregnancy portrait in the studio. Pregnancy, and expecting a child, is an important milestone in a family’s life. This is the perfect time to document this special gift with a professional maternity portrait session. Our studio offers our clients access to our private gown closet for their maternity portrait sessions, such as the gown shown here. We have over 10 custom gowns to choose from that will flatter anyone’s body. We also partner with a nearby salon that offers hair and makeup for our portrait clients. You will arrive at the studio with your hair and makeup already done, and then after your session you can enjoy a date with your love.

We recommend scheduling your pregnancy portrait session sometime between weeks 31-36, so you can be comfortable during your session. After your session, we will schedule a time for you to come back in and view and order your custom portraits. We can show you, virtually, your home with an appropriately sized portrait for the wall. This helps especially when you are not sure which size portrait would look best. We also offer custom framing for your portraits.
